About the Market
Mission
The purpose of The Artist's Market is to provide a festive, weekly outdoor marketplace where artists can have a regular means of creating income from their work; to provide artists a sense of community and a cooperative learning environment in which they can develop the business skills necessary for marketing and promoting their work successfully in a retail environment; to bring exposure to an enjoyment of the visual arts to the people of Austin; to promote downtown revitalization and tourism; and to enhance Austin's reputation as a vibrant, culturally-rich and multifaceted community. We are dedicated to offering a market of diversity, encompassing the many mediums of arts and crafts practiced in our city, while preserving the individual artistic integrity of these mediums. In doing this, we will bring Austin a pleasant outdoor shopping experience filled with the vibrance that makes our city great and the rich flavor and personality that makes Austin famous.
History
The Artist's Market (formerly the West 6th Street Artist's Market) was founded in September 2003 to provide a quality art market where shoppers could find a good mix of works by local artists, and to provide artists a supportive place to sell their work. In the fall of 2006, the Artist's Market setup in temporary locations around downtown Austin. In January 2007, the market reopened next door to it's original location on the deck and parking lot of its long-time supporter Mother Egans.
